In this day, we age faster everyday, a lot faster than our parents did. Everyday, new technology is introduced on to the market and what we bought only a week ago, thinking it was 'the latest hi tech blackberry' has suddenly become yesterday's news and will soon be obsolete. If it weren't for the oil price hikes, we may not be far from the day when air traffic matches the jams our roads face daily.
But what is it that makes technology so attractive to man despite having to get rid of working-condition appliances? What makes keeping up-to-date so important to fellow human beings that they disregard the better use that money could be put to?
Wikipedia defines technology as follows: Technology is a broad concept that deals with a species' usage and knowledge of tools and crafts, and how it affects a species' ability to control and adapt to its environment.
It is true that man only conquered the world due to this adaptation via nuts, bolts and other gadgets. They were able to adapt to the evolution the world experienced, from the ice ages to the stone ages to the dark ages to the golden era lit by the technological light bulb. Today, the light bulb is not given much thought unless its filament breaks and it needs to be replaced.
The point is, that the rat race to be the most technologically advanced community and, on a micro level, most up-to-date individual has reclined the value of the smaller things in life. It is this lack of cherishing what we have that is leading us to our oh-so-near downfall. The human species is so engrossed in moving forward, that it has forgotten that there is an end to every race.
One day, the natural resources of the world will deplete. Already, several countries overwork resources to a scale which will soon lead to unsustainable development, rending our future generations immobile and handicapped in terms of basic necessities.
We want to brighten our futures and our next-of-kin's. But your next-of-kin is not the only being that will roam the planet 20 years from now. Mine will too. And others too.
I think it is time that we give technology a break, the word is being used so often it is close to becoming a one-word cliche. If our world does not slow down to think back to what we have achieved and how we can achieve further without destroying our own future generations, nature's balance will topple. Our possibly comfortable lives will not coexist with the rest of the universe to enjoy the luxuries we have invented.
So, what say, we sit back and relax for a while, and give mother earth a breather?
